The man suspected in the Scottsdale hit and run that killed the son of Valley real-estate developer Michael Pollack is in the country illegally, Scottsdale police said Monday.
Scottsdale police arrested Cristino Torres-Romero, 33, Friday after an anonymous tip led them to Torres-Romero’s house in Tempe.
It is Scottsdale’s policy to ask immigration status of anyone arrested and booked into jail. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified, but the man is in a Maricopa County jail, said Officer David Pubins, a Scottsdale police spokesman.
Torres-Romero was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of a Sept. 11 fatal crash. Daniel Pollack, 31, was struck and killed about 1:15 a.m. on Hayden Road just north of Thomas Road. Witnesses said Pollack was standing on the striped median and not in a crosswalk when he was hit.
According to police, Torres-Romero’s F150 pickup showed signs that it was possibly involved in a fatal hit and run. The man admitted to detectives that he left the scene after striking Pollack that night, police said.
